Boy Scout Leaders Extend Olive Branch to Gay Teen-Ager
(Providence, Rhode Island-AP) -- Boy Scout leaders in Rhode Island are
apparently changing their tune about a gay Eagle Scout, who claims he
was
refused a camp position because of his sexual orientation.
The 16-year-old also alleged that staff members at the scout camp in
Hopkinton
told him he'd have to quit the Boy Scouts.
But, a statement issued by local scout officials and reported by The
Providence
Journal says the teen is a -- quote -- "honorable young man" and that
any
person's "sacred right to privacy" should be honored always.
They also say the boy can have the camp job if he still wants it.
The Scout's father told the Journal that his son doesn't know if he'll
take the job.
The Boy Scouts of America policy is to ban gays, atheists and women. But
the
New Jersey Supreme Court ruled last week that the scouts' ban on gays is
illegal
under the state's anti-discrimination laws.
