It's really easy... lay an open sheet of newspaper on the table... then fold
on it's natural fold... now using the center of the fold as your pivot
point,
fold the outside corners down ... this forms the angles for the top of the
hat... now just turn up each side opposite of your point... and walla... you
have a pirates hat!!

Take a full sheet of newspaper, fold in half along the fold line, fold in
half again the other way just to find the center point along the first fold
and open back to just having the first fold. Now fold the top corners on the
folded edge down to the center so you end up with a pointed top. Then fold
up
the bottom edges on both sides.
I hope that makes sense.

Attached is a piccy (IF YOU WISH A COPY OF THIS PLEASE EMAIL ME -
westgreys@iconnect.net.au - AND I WILL FORWARD IT ON TO YOU!) of how to make
a newspaper hat and a newspaper sword.
At least .. that's how I've always made them! The hat might be a bit dodgy,
but the swords are kewl <G> ... perhaps you could have some duels - like
that hockey game only sword fights or something :)

Single sheet of newsprint!
Fold in 1/2 (make it almost square) easiest to fold the newsprint top to
bottom edges gives you a slightly longer height over width
Fold in 1/2 again (it should be 1/4 the original size) to find the center
line
Fold the corners into each other to create the point of the hat (like a
paper airplane)
Fold up the bottom edges, then open up the middle to create the hat!

you can take it from there.....

We made Robinhood hats at Resident camp this summer...
The material was cut at an angle- a skewed square. Material needed:
Square felt. Sew up 2 sides. (Paper punch holes- naugah(sp) leather strips
whipped through holes.) then pull up two corners to middle
of top triangle - with a lace through to hold up sides...
You end up with a triangular hat- ours were green with
a Big white small red feather for leaders- then different colors for
each den.
Turned sideways- they make good Pirate hats.... (even with the
feather... but better without) If the felt is prepunched- they take 10
minutes per crew of 8 to 10. And they lasted all week - outdoors.
They would look even better in black. Extra felt could be used as
an eye patch.

don't forget
eye patches, newspaper swords and if you have extra material make rag hats
by cutting the material in a large triangle and tying it on the head ....
.like Aunt Jemima kids love it they are then crew members play games walk
the plank etc... move them to pirate captains by making the captain hat of
news paper.

We had a 'Pirate Party' for our last meeting, last term. The girls really
enjoyed it. The highlight was a treasure hunt (incorporating the links of
unity). Some of the girls made eye patches too. They all had fun checking
out each other's pirate clothes, and getting me to give them moustaches and
scars.

here are the instructions for the hat I usually use - it is not
actually a pirate hat but you could make adjustments. When I make them out
of newspaper I usually add a staple or two to keep it together.

there are also a couple other hat designs under this url
