Joe,

How about night Orienteering? Combined with some Astronomy?

At least by us, many nights are adequately lit that this can be an exciting
opportunity. Your State probably has an Orienteering Society in it, check
out their activities. Ours provides opportunities for a night orienteering
course -- which means we don't even have to do the work (unless you want to
help those folks out), and the boys can have a really interesting event.

Combine it with some Astronomy work (for direction finding) if you do it on
your own...Or even if you don't.
