I'm glad to see the clarification. However, I don't think I am the only =
one who is concerned with the potential implications of your council =
policy. We have had a number of discussions about "closed activities" =
on this list. Your council is probably trying to force parents to make =
a formal commitment to Scout leadership, but any time you institute such =
a policy you also leave yourself wide open to the impression that you =
are hiding something. I understand the arguments both ways and agree =
with most of them. However I tend to favor strongly encouraging all =
active adults to register but not making it a requirement to participate =
with their son. Show them the benefits of registration rather than =
making it just another hoop they have to go through. You will get a lot =
better commitment and support that way.

Well I think I gotta say that I was wrong to state that only registered
scouters are allowed on regular (not specified "family") camping events.
Although I called our DC and he said, "of course you're right" and I =
called
council and they said "absolutely"....it seems that I cannot find =
ANYTHING
in either the Guide to Safe Scouting or the BSA Rules and Regulations =
that
say that non-registered adults cannot regularly attend troop camping
events.
This policy (whether its our individual council policy or what) has been
drilled into our heads in both district and council training since I've
been in scouting. I know for a fact that it states in our council's =
camp
leader's manual that ONLY registered scouters are allowed to camp. I =
know
that our SMF course (of which I've been a staff member for years) states
that we don't allow non-registered adults to camp except in the event of
"family camping events".
I guess I simply drew the conclusion that this was a national policy. I =
do
indeed apologize for spreading the wrong poop!
