Every year in the town where I grew up, the local volunteer
fire company has a "Fireman's Fair". Some places they call
this sort of thing a "Street Fair", "Lawn Fair" or
"Carnival." At any rate, in Port Vue, Pennsylvania in the
late 50's it was called a "Fireman's Fair". But I digress.
Anyway, the local Fireman's fair always finished with a big
parade on Saturday night with over a 100 marching units
including bands and fire trucks from all of the surrounding
communities. For several years, one of the marching units
was an Explorer Post Drill Team. This was in the days when
Explorers actually had uniform pants that matched their
shirts....and white leggings. They carried "dummy" rifles.
Now that I know about the "Special Regulations", I'm
mortified.
But, back in 1959 as a 10 year old Lion Cub Scout, I
thought: " Wow! those guys are really cool!" Kids.
Harrumph. Naive, unsophisticated. Hah, what did kids know?
