Re: ALERT! BWCA Severe Weather Problems

To add to Steve's notice:

We in the Twin Cities Area have been watching all these news reports about
the that hit the BWCA with Ely, MN being the basecamp for the news folk to
report from. the area hit is about 12 miles by 30 miles heading from
basically Ely off to the East North East.

Video of the area reminds me of pictures from other areas hit hard by
spring storms all over the county. Just about every tree in down.
Estimates are 12.5 to 25 Million trees are down. The area hit is about 25%
of the total area that also includes the BWCA and Supperior National
Forest, plus up into Canada.

The news folks here have also been finding folks who lived through the
storm. Last night, KSTP-TV included a report and interview with a Scout
Leader and his Scouts. Here is a link to that station's report:

Note to all going or have plans to go to the BWCA area....the place is
still open and only some routes my need to be changed. At Philmont, they a
big wind storm that took down loads of trees that made getting through the
trails very hard (a one mile area took my crew 2 hours with 43 down...now
try portaging that same mile in the BWCA and all the trees are
down...wow!). Call your outfitter or the canoe base to check on and closed
areas, but remember, the BWCA is still open.

Also, since the Northern Tier has been hit hard and the OA has just started
working on service projects like that already done at Philmont, now they
need even more help. Call them and seen if you can help.
