Stan,
Jim Miller, Sr., posted a very good response to this; the only thing I'll
add is that new Commissioners are frequently recommended by current
Commissioners who see a person who may be capable and willing to accept the
position.

I have never had anything to do with up until now....>>
A Unit Commissioner should not be responsible for more than three units
(and this job only takes one hour a week). When you consider that Cub packs
usually outnumber Scout troops, at least some of a district's UCs will serve
more packs than troops. And don't worry about never having worked with a
pack. I was not involved when my son was a Cub, but the District
Commissioner saw fit to assign me to three packs (and a troop), so the first
thing I did was sign up for CSBLT. Haven't regretted it for a minute, and I
recently agreed to take on a fourth pack (sister unit to my assigned troop
which, beleive it or not, had a different UC).
The only thing I regret is that I can't do both sides of Roundtable every
month. I used to get by alternating months between the CS and BS sides; now
I can't do either because I'm an adult advisor to the OA and their meetings
are the same night.
