Re: Needed-Voices of Experience

Hi Calvin,

What a wonderful gift you gave this young man! Not only did you not
hold him back from attaining Eagle, but you allowed him to experience
the other joys of a wonderful childhood......playing football,
participating in the high school band, and the other activities that
make up a well-rounded life for young adults. What a shame if he had
died without experiencing all of the joys of childhood! One of the
questions I always ask at Eagle BORs is, "How do you balance out your
life? What is a priority in your life?" I am NOT expecting to hear,
"Scouts"! I am expecting to hear, "Family". IMNSHO it all goes back
to the attitude of "serious" scouting. I have found that many adult
leaders teach the boys that once they are in BOY Scouts (as opposed to
CUB Scouts), they are into SERIOUS scouting. Like Boy Scouts is their
life work, all they will be known for! In my home, it was simply an
addition to a well-rounded life. A structured way to have fun!

Anyway, I'm glad for both you and this young man that he had the
opportunity to achieve Eagle and yet also experience the happiness of
participating in high school life. He may not have lived up to his
commitment, but he certainly seems to have lived up to his potential.

YIS,
Pam Glidden
