Rank is an honor for the Scout that should be of his own private quest. No one
but the Scout should take it personally and the rank should be seen as an
indication of achievements towards goals.
Seems we always get caught up on the maturity for the Eagle. But I am learning
that we should allow the Scout to worry about his advancement and we adults
should stay focused on the Aims of Scouting. Then all earned ranks become a mark
of honor, not a stepping stone to Eagle. Our success as adult leaders come from
the character the young man displays when he is out of uniform, not from the
rank he wears on the uniform.
Why should the other Scouts care? We have to make sure that our goal is growth
towards the Scouts character and not create an atmosphere of success that is
dependent on rank towards the Eagle.
