Re: "Shadowing" a troop outing

Our Troop has one or two campouts a year that we specifically invite
families to go along on--mostly because we can then increase the total
number of people, and the cost per person goes down.

Our spring camp has been held on an island off the east coast of
Malaysia for a number of years. There is a resort next door with
air-conditioned cabins, where the families stay, and the boys are not
allowed to visit. The camp we use is much more primitive, but most
activities are held on the beach anyway. Some of the mothers are
registered MB counselors, and one of them is usually a lifeguard or
nurse as well. They return to their own resort for meals.

This year we also took a trip up to Taman Negara National Forest on
peninsular Malaysia, and as it was a bit unusual for our troop, we
invited families to go as well. The SM was a little upset when certain
mothers stuck their noses in, trying to run the program, but he managed,
and we will proactively avoid the problem next time, hopefully.

We do make clear that our insurance does NOT cover family members who
are not involved with the camp directly. (It does cover MB counselors
while they are working, to my knowledge).

We have pursued this policy because many of our families are here for a
limited time (2 to 3 years) and try to travel as much as they can during
the limited vacation time. Allowing them to go along with the boys means
that the boys are more likely to attend as well.
