Question re Vandalism

I have a question to pose to the list:
It has taken me a few months to get our SM aside and tell him of an act of
vandalism that was done to my car during a troop campout (not there Friday
night but there Sunday morning). Apparently, one of the boys in our troop
(don't know who but have a few suspects) carved a derrogatory remark in the
dashboard of my car.
Now, the CC, who is not a fan of mine (he's an older guy and I am a female
who doesn't seem to know my place) is trying to convince me that this is my
fault for not locking my car while it was at our campsite and also that it is
now too late to do anything about it. I refuse to take any blame--if there
is anywhere one should not worry about deliberate vandalism to one's car, it
is on a troop campout.
My feeling is that vandalism is serious, especially to a car, and that it is
never too late to make the responsibile party accountable. I think we are
doing the Scout in question a disservice NOT hold him accountable. Also, if
I were a new volunteer coming into the troop I would not be happy to learn
that this kind of vandalism goes unquestioned and that volunteers are held to
blame for the destruction to their property.
I am crushed for two reasons:
I camp a lot with the troop and am a willing driver--heck, I even bought the
SUV instead of a T-bird so I could drive kids on campouts; and
The derrogatory remark was directed at my son.
Any thoughts from Scouts-L what should be done here? My feeling is that
until there is a resolution, I am no longer willing to drive.
