Money at Scout Camp

We decided to allot $5 to each Scout at Summer Camp if they need it for
supplies, help with activity fees, kits, arrows, pop from the machine,
souvenirs. We have yet to implement a Troop Account Financial Method so
this was a compromise move until then. I was worried that some Scouts
would go to camp with a wad of money, others would have little pocket
money to spend. One member of the committee has a son who needed a full
scholarship and she felt any additional fees/money are the parent's
responsibility. I have both e-mailed and sent home packets to parents
about additional fees that could be incurred.
As for my worries about the kids being gainfully occupied at camp at least
some of the time - well, from the comments I got, I probably worry too
much. I've planted some seeds with the leaders going in terms of
expectations of new boys making Tenderfoot, for instance and will work in
the next couple meetings to help ensure that possibility (cover flag
etiquette and do the fitness tests).
The older boys will probably take care of themselves, but I will also
plant some seeds with the leaders/parent going that they could use some
help with compass skills.
I also did (SM out of town) a "SM" moment of sorts and explained how blue
cards worked. New boys didn't know and old guys weren't doing it right.
They sure were surprized that they needed one and a counselor signature
before I would buy their award!
Thanks for all the posts about summer camp. I think we're getting on
track.
