Don,
Parents are a big problem with ADHD children. In fact sometimes, if it
wasn't for the parents, in some cases, you could almost call the child
"normal" (whatever that is for a kid!) I'm sure for a while I was a big
problem too! My oldest is 15, then one is 14. The 10 year old is extremely
dyslexic. But... Big deal. So they have a disease just like a child with
asthma. The best way, that I have found is to not exaggerate what they have,
but to downplay it. It is never an excuse. If they start saying things like
"my ritalin" hasn't started working or something like that. Whoa be them!!!
Then they get in more trouble! Kids that have ADHD have to take
responsibility for their illness. They can learn to control their behavior
if they want to. Don't get me wrong, My kids are not saints. They still try
to get away with murder, but they better find a better reason than I'm hyper!
One thing I have always told them and it makes them furious, is when they
start using it as an excuse, I just say, "I have a bone in my leg, but I
still have to walk!"
But we have a daughter that is mentally retarded so we are always looking for
ways to downplay an illness and not over stimulate any reason for excuse.
Most parents of ADHD kids just don't know how to deal with them. I have been
to hundreds of seminars on ADHD and while I'm no expert from going to them, I
feel my life experiences have made me a pretty good source of info. If you
need some advice or want to vent, My computer is always here!
Let me know what I can do!
