A comparison of scout troop software packages

Norman Turrill (nturrill@PSGHS.EDU)

Dear Scouts-L,

Because of the new rank requirements effective April 1st, all troops will =
have to upgrade or purchase new troop management computer software. In =
preparation for this for our Troop 203 in Hershey, Pennsylvania, I have =
completed a comparison of the six most viable packages, evaluating 54 =
features. The packages evaluated are Rank N' File, RecordKeeper, =
Scoutmate, Trooper, TroopMaster 2000, and WinScout. I would like to offer =
this comparison to anyone interested.=20

If you would like a copy of this comparison, then email a request to me at =
the address below. I will reply with an email attachment in MS Word 97 =
(Windows) and Word 98 (Macintosh) format. Or if you need a different =
format, then let me know.

I have put considerable effort into this project, much more than originally=
imagined (but isn't that true of every computing project?). However, as =
a computing professional with some 30 years experience, I felt compelled =
to be thorough. I even requested suggestions and corrections from each of =
the vendors represented in an effort to be fair to all. I hope other =
scouters find it useful. =20

I would also like to find an appropriate place to post this on one or more =
scouting web sites. If you have any ideas, please let me know. If there =
is sufficient interest, I will consider producing occasional updates.

Yours in Scouting,
Norman Turrill
