Should I become a Professional Scouter?

Being on this list for over 2 years I have read and used some great advice and
thoughts. Now I'm looking for some opinions. I know there are several
professionals past and present on this list that may be of some help. I would
also be open to anyone else's thoughts as well. I'm usually a lurker answering
mostly in private, so I'll start with a brief bio. I first got involved with
Scouting as a youth (11yrs), and I never left. Became and still am an Assistant
Scoutmaster (13yrs) and a Varsity Coach (4yrs). Active advisor for the OA
(Vigil) and very active on the district (activities) and council (training)
levels. Worked on camp staff for 16 years. I am also a key member of the paid
support staff for my council and the job is rewarding and fun. With some big
changes occuring in my council, I have been asked to become a Professional
Scouter. I am in the middle of some long term projects in my volunteer
positions that I would like to see to their completion. One deals with a major
reorganizing of an important OA committee. I am interested in being a
Scoutmaster for the next Jamboree in 2001. I am also very strongly wanting to
continue with my troop. I have been asked before, but the timing wasn't right
for other reasons and I quickly declined. The other reasons are no longer
issues and I can go either way. Right now, there is a great opportunity that
probably will not be there when I am "ready". I purposely left out a large
amount of details which I can furnish upon request. Most details would bias the
opinions which is why I am asking the list as well as friends and co-workers for
their thoughts. Please reply to me privately so as not to tie up the list and
thank you in advance for your time.
YiS,
Sam Herb
