Some of you may not be aware that the Air Force is trying to establish a =
new =
low level bomber training route that will directly over fly Philmont at v=
ery =
low levels. The folling is a report from Mark Griffin, Director of Philmo=
nt =
PTC, of a public hearing of this Air Force proposal held this past Tuesda=
y =
night at Angel Fire.

Sb: [Philmont] RBTI Meeting
Hello All.
It is snowing at Philmont. Hopefully we will get enough to make an impac=
t on =
the fire danger.
I couldn't post a message about the RBTI yesterday because our server was=
=
down. Hopefully this will get out today.
The meeting in Angel Fire went very well. All but one of the speakers (a=
bout =
30 of the 150 in attendance) was opposed to the route that went over =
Philmont. =
(The one had blind allegiance to the Air Force.) Many mentioned Philmont=
in =
a =
way that would have made you all proud. One lady talked about her son co=
ming =
to Philmont as a young man from the northeast and that it was his first =
wilderness experience - that would have been ruined by jets flying over a=
t =
400 feet.
David Vacker, the General Manager of Vermejo Park (Ted Turner's land) was=
=
there and voiced their opposition and said that the plan was ill-conceive=
d =
and that they would fight it vigorously.
Obviously there was no reaction from the Air Force, everything was record=
ed =
for the record. I understand the meeting in Taos last night was attended=
by =
over 500 people who were almost violent in their opposition to the route.=
The deadline for input to the Environment Impact Statement (EIS) is June =
16. =
Please encourage people to write to whomever they can before that date.
Some notes:
The EIS did not consider seasonal populations.
It does not even mention the Carson National Forest nor the Barker Wildli=
fe =
Area.
It did not mention the petroglyhs or Philmont's sites on the National =
Register of Historic Places.
It says that our area is currently a flight corridor so there is no =
additional =
impact. I believe that flying over at 30,000 feet is significantly diffe=
rent =
than 400 feet.
It said that our area's normal sound level is 45db?????? (That must be f=
rom =
the snoring in the summer.) And the residents would get used to the noise=
(up =
to 117db) after time - What about you guys that are only here for 12 days=
and =
living in a tent?
Other than that, it is generally inaccurate about everything else too.
