5th graders

We have as many opinions on Webelos transition as there are units here.
Some SMs suggest that 5th graders were still really too young and
immature to be suddenly thrown into a scout program. Others suggest that
they don't get them early enough to get them properly prepared for summer
camp, etc.
Some Packs don't want to let go of their Webelos until the end of the
school year (claiming they want them to get all of their pins, but most
likely also not to lose their parents) The District encourages bridging
the boys as soon as or when they are qualified and ready to do so. We
also advocate the 18 month plan which would set bridging in Jan, Feb,
March of 5th grade - assuming they are active in the summer.
Actually, age and size has very little to do with maturity. (I think
they tell you that in Adult Leader Training, too)
We've all seen a number of older boys be much less 'mature' or at least
less well-behaved than some 5th graders.
I personally think it's how the 5th graders are PREPARED for joining a
Troop that is the concern.
I also think that some of the Scoutmasters need to revisit training & how
to work with new Scouts.
And I also think that maybe the current Webelos (2nd year) program just
isn't doing it.
Simply spending a few more months as a Cub Scout isn't going to change
things.
I am interested in hearing what Packs do to prepare their 5th graders and
what Troops do in working with their new boys. I am also especially
interested to here what is done at the district or council levels to
train/support/suppliment this.
Thanks.
