January Campout:
Patrol Leader -
"Mr. Fox, why don't we just put our cook kit into the Patrol box and wash it
when we get home?"
Go ask your Senior Patrol Leader.
Senior Patrol Leader -
"Mr. Fox, is it O.K. for the Eagles to put their cook kit into their Patrol
box and take it home to wash?"
Whatever you think is best.
Two months later, Assistant Scoutmaster, a few weeks before our March campout -
"Boy, something sure stinks in the Eagle's Patrol box. I bet it hasn't been
cleaned out since the last campout. They've got to clean that thing out!"
Have the SPL have the QM talk to the PL about it. Suggest that the PL have
the Patrol QM meet with the ASM (whose property the Troop trailer is
quartered on) and get that cleaned out.
The above is done. Patrol QM blows off meeting with ASM. ASM not happy,
says, "I'm bringing the trailer to the next campout and they're cleaning it
out at a Troop meeting!"
Check it out with the SPL. SPL says, "O.K.". It is done.
Eagles empty out Patrol box at Troop meeting while rest of Troop is playing
game. Gak. Three bucket line is set up, washing is begun. Cook kit is
opened. Gak. Gak. Yow. Boys were unaware that mold can grow 1/4" (~
.5cm) thick. Some material in cook kit identifiable, some not. Mr. Fox
hasn't seen anything like this since biology courses in graduate school.
"Mr. Fox, we're throwing away the plastic cups and buying new ones."
Mr. Fox declines to refer this to SPL, exercises veto. Entire cook kit is
scrubbed until it glows. Large lumps of vigorously organic material removed
by hand (squeamishness is reluctantly overcome). Three pot contents are
renewed twice.
No permanent scars, and everybody learned something.
