I just recently sent a copy of this request to another Scouting
email list and recieved some good advice from a friend, who
also suggested that I look at SCOUTS-L. This concentrates
mainly on photos, but other means of getting the word out
are equally desired.

We are going to try an experiment at our Cub Scout Pack.
We have been trying to think of ways to "advertise" what
we have going in our Cub Scout program to prospective
boys and their parents.
One idea is to get some good photographs to develop
into a display that will help them see just what cool stuff
we do during the year. The display will probably take the
shape of a tri-fold, with one or three great photos enlarged
enough to cover all three sides.
Other great shots will be reproduced at various sizes to
insert somewhere on this display. These will represent:
Religion/Service Ceremonies/Awards
Sports/Fitness Field Trips/Parades
Camping/Fishing Uniform/Appearance
1999 Camporee 1999 Blue and Gold Banquet
1999 Pinewood Derby
There will be three additional categories:
Funniest Most Memorable Moment
and finally "Best Overall Picture"
I am going to send out a flyer to all of the parents asking
them to temporarily mount on poster board ALL of the
pictures they have taken having to do with their Cub Scout
and his Pack. They will also be asked to put their NAME
on this poster, then put labels below each photo that has
a TITLE of what is in the picture and also a NEGATIVE
REFERENCE NUMBER.
There are several other ideas spinning off from this.
The first is to promote this as a contest to get the best
photos for our display and to hand out ribbons for
first, second, and third place for all of the categories listed.
That comes out to be 36 ribbons.
The second is to use this project to allow people to order
reprints of some great photos that they did not get them-
selves. The really great moments are sometimes the ones
we are personally involved in or we just do not have a camera
in our hands. Someone else probably did though.
The third is to develop a Pack Year Book. It might be more
like a Year Pamphlet, but the idea is to produce something
the boys and their parents could keep forever as a keepsake.
Here is where my inexperience shows.
Just what does it take to develop year book pages using
photos? Cut and paste photos onto special graph layout
paper, then send it off for production? Or scan everything
into computer files and produce it using programs like
MS Publisher? I've got that program and this option SEEMS
like the best cost-effective, but just have not done anything
like this before. When would be the best time to do this?
I'm considering doing this just after Graduation Campout
so that we will have photos available for "the whole year,"
but I'm not sure what kind of participation I will get when
the boys and parents are not actively meeting during the
summer.
Maybe someone else has tried something like this before
and can give me some advice on things to consider.
