In Longs Peak Council the council only maintains the record of
who is registered as a MB counselor (position code 42), not what
merit badges they are counseling. It is up to the district
advancement chair and their committee to maintain the district
MB list with who is available to counsel what merit badge
district wide. Counselors also have the option to counsel MB
only within their own troop, so these people are not listed on
the published district MB list, but do appear on the troop's MB
counselor list.

This may seem confusing, but Longs Peak is one of the largest
councils geographically, including parts of three states. A
Scout troop in Scottsbluff NE does not need to know who the MB
counselors are in Boulder CO or Laramie WY. Even in my own
district we have two major cities. Sometimes, when situations
and procedures vary from council to council, it may be because
there are some valid reasons. One size does not always fit all,
and that is why some things are left to the local council to
determine.

On this list, we have many Scouters working in differing areas
of the Scouting program, from many different areas of the
country and of the world. We need to keep this in mind, and
remember that not everyone follows the same procedures, but we
all work to bring the best possible program to the youth in the
units we serve. I value the exchange of ideas and the
opportunities to see the ways others handle the same things I
work with all the time.
