Steve:
The matches' limited availability may be less a factor of potential
liability, and more one of virtual obsolecence. First came pilot-lights
on stoves, ovens, and water-heaters. Then pilot lights were replaced
with electronic ignitions to avoid the dangers of an unlit-pilot light.
Matches bouncing around in their boxes, in a carton, on a delivery truck
sounds like a pretty remote danger. It's not like "suicide" runs with
nitroglycerine.
In the Washington, DC area the small, pocketable, strike-anywhere match
boxes are available in 8-10 packs at REI,,and I suspect other
sporting-goods stores.
