Re: Strange patrol names - Use Caution, and do your homework

We are faced currently with a similar problem. One of our PLs (only boy joined
scouting late at 13 I think and progressed to 1st class quickly) was elected
PL recently and has persuaded the other scouts to name there patrol DX (I
think that's it). I got an email from one of my committee members about it and
learned it's the name of some popular professional wrestler that goes around
grabbing his crouch and telling people what they can do with it! Since we
have just reorganized and adjusted our patrols and had PL elections I called
the SPL and asked him if he had the names of the new patrols so I could review
them for "health and safety" (nice stretch perhaps but I'd bring up mental
health and the Scout Oath about keeping once self "mentally awake, morally
straight"...... He started telling me some of the names (after a couple of
traditional and some a bit strange but acceptable) he said there was one (he
never said what it was) that he felt was not a good thing. I asked if he
wanted me to talk to the patrol leader to which he immediately said NO! He
would try to handle it first and then if necessary he'd get me involved. I was
very proud of him. This past meeting I saw the SPL, ASPL, and PL huddled but
have not heard the results. Also another committee member has approached me
who's son is in the patrol and made it plain to me he is not happy with it
either. I can just imagine (no I'd rather not)! what the cheer, yell, secret
signal of recognition might have been! This PL is a big fan of professional
wrestling as are a few others in the troop, Our SPL and I talk for a few
minutes once a week outside of meetings so I will quiz him then in how he made
out.
I'd like them to stick to the patrol patches available and add adjectives to
the patch; but at same time am trying to give them as much authority as
possible.
