Ahhh, nostalgia. Anyone else here old enough/dumb enough to have gone to
the Water Gate concerts on Sunday evenings in DC?

For those too young, the Water Gate was where the Watergate of notoriety
now is; ampitheater stepped seats from the street to the Potomac River,
where a barge with a bandshell was moored. The NSO (and other local
orchestras) gave weekly free concerts from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

In the 1960s these fell out of favor, when National Airport's traffic
rose to 3 a minute -- conductors felt the constant pausing interrupted
the flow the music -- and some of the longer pieces simply couldn't be
finished at a reasonable hour.

I must say, though, the screaming jets do add *something* to the 1812
that the cannon just can't imitate. (g)
