I got a copy of the new Requirements Book (RB) today. I'd like to thank
Judd Stiff for his help in getting me a copy before my local Council
Scout Shop got them in.
I did a quick scan this afternoon. The scan shows mostly minor changes
to Merit Badges, except for Graphic Arts, Bird Study, Journalism,
Skating, & Snow Sports, which had more extensive rewrites.
A few quick notes on what I found:
The missing portion of Electronics was restored.
Nature is STILL numbered differently in the RB than in the MB Pamphlet
(MBP).
The note at the end of Bugling which was not in last year's book was
also put back (using a trumpet or cornet is OK).
The changes to Communications are a couple of minor wording changes and
dropping the "lead a CoH" item, as has been discussed.
Skating is now split into separate lists for In-Line and Roller Skating
(and Ice Skating, of course).
As has been discussed, Skiing has been replaced with Snow Sports. The
skiing portions of Snow Sports are, in general, similar to the old
Skiing rules, and a Snow Boarding option is now available. The Merit
Badge has a new design.
The CPR change that was omitted for Small Boat Sailing was fixed.
A first aid requirement has been added to the Skating and Snow Sports
Merit Badges.
New or revised dates for MBP's are shown in the table on the inside back
cover for:
1999 - Bird Study, Journalism, Skating, Snow Sports, Theater, &
Waterskiing
1998 - Env. Sci, Graphic Arts & Rowing and
1997 - Archeology, Climbing, Communications & Dentistry.
Other changes to the book were mentioned by Steve Henning last week, and
of course the Rank Requirement changes have been public for months.
I did find a few typos, also.
I'll work on the USSSP pages over the weekend.
