But the SAME measures that will prevent Uncle Charlie from becoming a
threat will work just as well, if not better, if the source of the
danger is some stranger who approaches via the Internet. If the Scouts
have been taught the three R's of child abuse - Recognize, Resist,
Report - then the improper approach from some stranger who has
harvested information from the net will bring immediate application of
those 3R's, far quicker than an approach by Uncle Charlie will. Thus,
once again, the primary defense is to educate the Scouts in how to
recognize potential abuse situations and what to do when they come
across them. If the child can handle Uncle Charlie he can certainly
handle the internet stranger.
I am not in favor of gratuitously providing information, but neither am
I a supporter of worrying about supplying less information than is
already easily available to those in the community.
Somehow, every time I have read one of these threads the first thing
that pops into my head is the old 60's lyric:
"Paranoia strikes deep, into you heart it will creep. Starts when
you're always afraid . . ."
If our charges are properly trained then we should be comfortable
sending them out to face this big, bad world.
