Jessica makes a very good point here. All of us who are married have
some sort of support from our spouses. It ranges from whole hearted
participation to mild hostility, but it is there in some form. This is a
good time of year to thank them for it (there is no bad time of year for
thanks.), so let's do it.
My own wife did serve as a den leader and den leader coach, and she was
on the troop committee when our sons were in scouting. But she has long
since bowed out to pursue her own interest of teaching music. However,
she has never complained about the amount of time I spent in scouting,
and has always supported my activities by taking care of things at home
while I was away. This included one year when I was camping with our
sons on my birthday, her birthday, and our anniversary. It included my
being at Philmont when our first grandchild was born (three weeks early),
and staffing the National Jamboree long after our youngest was out of
scouting. Her only comment was made when a group of her musician friends
told her she would get a divorce if she spent so much time with music,
her reply was "Dave will never know, he'll be out with the scouts.".
And Jessica, she even puts up with my collection of scouting coffee mugs,
even though no one in our family drinks coffee.
So, Thank you Carolyn. I love you, and I want you to know how much it
has meant to me that you have continued to support my participation in
Scouting for twenty eight years.
