I wanted to add the comments from Peter Murphy <MurphyP@TCE.COM>
Here's what he stated:
>In many districts, including my own, we use the West knot as a
>tribute fund raiser. Each year, we secretly select a deserving
>Scouter to honor and solicit donations in that person's honor.
>When we reach the $1000 we buy that person the knot. It's a fine
>way to honor the Scouter and to raise money for the Council.
And here's what I wrote privately to a Scouter that wanted to know
more about allowing a youth member to wear the West Fellowship:
ANYONE (in or out of Scouting, youth, adult, volunteer or
professional) may be honored with the James E. West Fellowship.
The AWARD is presented to the person (or person's family) in which
the donation was given in memory of, in recognition of, or in honor
of, as in the case of your new Eagle Scout.
The RECIPIENT, if a Scout or Scouter, wears the square knot
centered above the left pocket seam or in row with other square
knot emblems, if he or she has such.
(This was all taken from the James West Fellowship Award materials,
which your Council has or can obtain from National's Finance
Support Division. It's also available on National's Finance
Support Divisions' website at http://www.fsd.com )
He wrote that his Troop is going to recognize a new Eagle Scout
with the West Fellowship at his Court of Honor; I replied:
That's a great honor, and I'm sure your Council is pleased with the
additional income the honor will bring!!
The West Fellowship is one of those "exceptions" to square knots
being worn by youth members. Other exceptions are the Hornaday, OA
Distinguished Service, youth religious emblem, and all three of the
heroism and distinguished service awards.
Again the *square knot represents* actual awards which the
individual has been honored with or has earned, and is worn in the
absence of the regular award. Since there's not a cloth emblem
which youth can wear (yet), the knot is worn by youth and adult
members who have been honored with the West Fellowship.
Thanks, Peter, for allowing me to "piggyback" and remind Scouters
that this is an excellent way of both contributing to the good of
the local Council as well as to the excellence of our hardworking
volunteers and youth members!
Settummanque!
