I woud like to recommend that those of you interested in learning more
about Scouting in other countries visit the home page of the 17th
Bratislava at http://www.shmu.sk/~danis/17odd/ The 17th Bratislava is a
relatively new troop, founded in 1992, because Scouting in Slovakia is very
young, but they have done an excellent job on their home page.
Once you are at their home page, go to the link labeled "Our latest camp
(summer 98)" This will take you to an English language description and
photos of their three week troop summer camp. It presents quite a contrast
to American Boy Scout summer camps. Below that link, there are links to
English language descriptions and photos of some of their weekend
activities.
A leader of the 17th Bratislava, Martin Benko, was the leader of the
contingent of 6 Scouts and 2 leaders from Slovakia who participated in our
1997 Michigan International Camporee. My troop, Troop 180, East Lansing,
served as hosts for the Slovakian and Zimbabwean contingents. We will be
taking 11 Scouts and 2 leaders from our Troop 180 Venture patrol on a five
week trip to Europe next summer and one of those five weeks will be spent
in summer camp with the 17th Bratislava. We are really looking forward to
this opportunity. Martin Benko is already planning to lead another group
from Slovakia to our Michigan International Camporee 2000.
