Re: Latin interpreter strip

(no name) ((no email))
Fri, 11 Dec 1998 00:15:43 -0600

The question was:

>>I had contacted my council office asking about the availability
>>of an Interpreters strip for Latin. Was told that one does not
>>exist. While I realize Latin is not a conversational language
>>I find it a shame that Scouting does not allow us to recognize
>>those Scouts who demonstrate a proficiency in a "language"
>>that is the root of our own. Any other thoughts on this?

Yep, and it follows Tom Turba's information, below:

>A Scout can wear a "Latin" interpreter strip if he has passed the
>requirements. It is simply that the strips are not available at
>the Scout shop. There is not much demand for them. You will have
>to have one specially made.

And the BEST way to get it made is through the BSA's Supply
Division. Your Council should be able to special-order a set (two
is the minimum) of interpreter strips. The cost is going to be a
little higher (like a buck and a half instead of a buck a piece).
Your Council's trading post should have a special Supply Division
Special Order form that they complete with the stock number of the
Interpreter strip (there's a special number for "all others") and
normally the Council would require you to "pony up" the money for
the strips in advance.

Now BEFORE you do this, do THIS: Write to the BSA's International
Division at the BSA's National Office address and ask them if THEY
have a set of Latin interpreter strips. Good chance they will;
between them and the Direct Service Council, they carry close to 40
DIFFERENT interpreter strips!! This is where the "overruns" go to
when individuals order new or different interpreter strips.

Remember that the "BSA source" is the BEST source for special
insignia that you cannot find (or cannot get ordered) through your
local Council. The Supply Division folks have been the best bunch
of Scouters *I've* ever had to deal with, and if they can't do it,
then it's for a prudy good reason!

Thanks, Tom, for allowing me to "piggyback" onto your great
response!
