Eagle Age

Kevin Jura (kfjura@HOTMAIL.COM)

Hi,

My name is Kevin Jura, and I am an Eagle Scout (c/o 96). IMHO, it
should not matter what age the Eagle Candidate is, but whether or not
they have achieved the rank through their own initiative or through
their parents and scoutmasters. When I was 13, I was eligible to be an
Eagle Scout, I however steadfastly refused to turn in the paper work.
The reason for this was that throughout my scouting career, I had been
pushed to make Eagle. Yes, I too wanted to make Eagle, but I also
wanted to have fun and enjoy my time in scouting. I eventually turned
my paperwork in at age 15 and received my Eagle at 16. The reason I had
waited for close to two years was that I wanted it to be something I
wanted and not something my parents and leaders pushed me into. I am
grateful for my wait. No, I can never claim to be a 13 year old Eagle,
but I am able to claim that I truly do understand what it means to be an
Eagle Scout. Had I received my Eagle Scout at age 13, I know I would
never have appreciated what it means to be an Eagle Scout, and I
probably would have dropped out of Scouting soon after. Instead I am
still going strong.
Since then I have been working with a Troop in my hometown (not my
original troop -- long story). First as a JASM, and now as an Assistant
Scoutmaster. I am 19 years old and 2 years shy of my 15 year veteran
award. So you can see, the attitude does make the difference
