Each state has a Supreme Court, which is the highest court in the state.
Except NY, where the Supreme Court is the lowest court. (I can't remember
what the highest court in NY is called.) There is also a Federal/US Supreme
Court. The California case went to the California Supreme Court and was
decided there, It was not decided by the US Supreme Court.
