George:
I certainly intend to teach the boys that a pocket knife if a very useful
tool....but I must also discourage the boys from ever carrying a knife to
school. Last year we had an elementary school age girl who was suspended from
school for a day because she brought a paring knife in her sack lunch to cut
up an apple. Society is a lot differant now, then when we were kids. The kid's
intentions & ability to be trusted don't play into school policies regarding
knives, and anything else they consider to be a weapon. That is why we don't
allow knives to be carried at pack / den events, unless it's by leader
request.
