Rejected Scout

Dale Karweik (karweik.1@OSU.EDU)
Fri, 4 Dec 1998 10:04:52 -0500

I have particpated in a Troop Committee discussion about not accepting a
Scout into our Troop. He was a participant in an after school program
called latch-key and was a bigger handful than the program supervisor (a
committee member) could handle. Luckily for all concerned, the majority
decided to accept the Scout. We completed his Eagle Court of Honor two
weeks ago.

I would offer to the list that unless there are some clear safety or
ethical issues, a boy should be given a chance. If things don't work out
then handle them as necessary, but err on the side of the boy until proven
otherwise.

I would also offer that this is a subject that no matter how long it is
discussed on the list, there will never be a time when a single solution
results because every discussion will end up at the Troop level with all
the personalities, biases and limitations of the people involved coming
into play. That is where the ideals break down.
