One more time folks? Waaaaaaaay baaaaaaaaack in 1973 when I became a
WeBeLoS I was taught the "We'll Be Loyal Scouts" acronym. At the time,
there was no Webelos badge and our ultimate goal was to earn the "Arrow
of Light." That's what I remember, and that's what I always believed
WeBeLoS stood for.
In 1984 I came across a Lion-Webelos Cub Scout Book at a flee market. It
is the 1965 printing and once belonged to "Richard Miller" of Den 3,
Pack 3396. In this particular book, there is no mention of "We'll Be
Loyal Scouts" or "Wolf-Bear-Lion-Scouts" acronyms, but the Webelos Badge
is definately the same as the present day "Arrow of Light."
As for how the name should be rendered in print? Simple, most of the
official BSA publications I have seen have it as "Webelos." The only
exception I could find is in that 1965 Lion-Webelos book which had it as
"Webelos" in the introduction of the Webelos section, and "WEBELOS"
later on.
Finally, in order to bring a little levity to this discussion, I have to
ask a question that occured to me while writing this. If "Webelos"
stands for "We'll Be Loyal Scouts", does that mean that first year
Webelos will be less loyal? ;-} Hey, since Webelos is now a two year
program why don't they bring back the Lion rank? It's certainly easier
to deal with than Webelos I and Webelos II. Can you imagine what a Cub
Scout's uniform would look like with Bobcat, Wolf, Bear, Lion, Webelos,
AND Arrow of Light?
