Might as well chime in on this one. I do a lot of work with boys and sharp
things....knives, chisels, drawknives, etc. PLEASE, by all means, use
well-sharpened knives for boys learning to handle a knife. Think of it
this way: The less skilled the worker, the better the tool needs to be.
This is true with just about any hand tool. Everyone has seen the "Junior
Carpentry Set" and has seen a boy express his real frustration in trying to
saw a piece of wood with that little dull saw. But give a boy a well-made
sharp saw and his chance of SUCCESS in sawing that board goes up about two
hundred percent! And folks, we're in the "making boys successful" business.
By all means, get a one-to-one adult/boy ratio if at all possible....but
don't expect a boy not to cut his finger at some point down the line. Most
of us did. It's not the best way to learn....but it is one method. It also
teaches practical first aid technique. I'm not kidding.
