Troop Accounts/Thrifty

With all this discussion about troop accounts, I would like share some
thoughts about how it fits in with teaching a Scout to be thrifty.
I recently had to fill in at Scoutmaster Fundamentals and do the presentation
on troop finance. The syllabus talks about how paying weekly dues helps
teach a Scout to be thrifty, but I was trying relate this to the prevalent
circumstances in our district where most of the troops collect their dues
annually. What I did was to point out that a troop account that enables a
Scout to pay his own way to summer camp or a high adventure trip, or to buy
needed camping equipment, or even to pay his annual dues at recharter time,
can actually be used as a tool to teach a Scout to be thrifty and to pay his
own way.
