Webelos

Egads! I must be getting old! In a reply to a posting about the Webelos
Traveler Activity pin, Paul Wolf comments "Webelos ...is an acronym for
'WE'll BE LOyal Scouts'" and should always be written that way."

I hope I'm not the only one who remembers that the term "Webelos" predates
the current Cub Scout rank system, and "We'll Be Loyal Scouts" was simply
the BSA's backfill to keep using the existing terminology. In my Cub
Scouting days (1958-1962) the "regular" ranks were Wolf, Bear, and Lion.
Webelos was the transition rank to Boy Scouts, and (according to the
literature of the time) took its name from the first letters of Wolf, Bear,
Lion, and Scout with "Webelos" being the easiest way to pronounce the
acronym of W-B-L-S. Its requirements were essentially the same as those for
Tenderfoot. (similar to what are now the "Scout" requirements) and the Cub
Scout handbook talked about how earning "Webelos" combined the best of the
Cub Scouting skills with the Boy Scouting skills we would learn.

Of course, for all I know, the use of "Webelos" in the 1950s might have been
an earlier bit of justification, and it could have been used for yet a
different purpose before my experience with it. Any Cub Scouts of the '40s
or '30s out there who have stories to tell?
