Peer BoR? Red Flag!

Hummmmmm. Depends. MAYBE, depending on the maturity of THE (read
MAYBE 1) Scout being included as the BoR peer participant. The Troop
I'm with did that many peers extensively. The process deteriorated
dramatically, even when using older Scouts. The final straw was a group
of youth who tokk it upon themselves to tell a Scout he had "failed" and
would not be advanced to Tenderfoot. This good natured young had been
with the Troop for a year and had finally started to overcome difficult
challenges. Then they laughed about his being near tears. He conveyed
to the Advancement person the emotional difficulty that sitation
triggered.
When I heard about it I trumpeted for returning to the adults from
Committee registration doing BoR's. The senior SA was of the same mind
and made arrangements to get the committee members to reestablish a
regular, scheduled night for BoR's. We are also working hard on the
frame of mind that would support the BoR Scouts' actions... far too
detailed to start to convey now.
Now, the Scout subjected to the hazing - harrassment at a time that he
was so emotionally invested has since finished 2nd class requirements
and will have a 1st class BoR next week. This has been in a span of
about 6-7 weeks.
