Re: Drinking and Scouts

Hi Bernadette...

You won't need your flamy clothing with me.....
Good on you..... Don't hold back but be subtle.....
I am a smoker and social drinker..... I do not smoke in front of my cub
scouts and never will..... Alcohol is not permissible at our Scout Group
functions unless it is sanctioned by our HQ and is a fundraising event for
our community.....
I have had to discuss the code of conduct with a leader and have very
politely asked them to remove themselves from around the children when
smoking..... I have no problem with this and coming from me (a smoker) I
suppose they see my example and comply.
There are now three smokers and three non-smokers in our leader team and by
our conduct among the cubs no-one would ever know we smoked.....
Lets face it - in scouting the important things are giving the
cubs/scouts/youth members programs that are fun and informative..... I find
that when I am involved in program delivery I am having too much fun to stop
it and disappear to have a smoke...... I do not smoke on pack nights until
all the children have left the den and I am leaving..... I sleep for about 8
hours a night so I am sure I can go without a ciggie for 2 hours on a pack
night.....
For me it comes down to my responsibility to my leadership role.... I
certainly do not wish to be thrown out of Scouting for breaking my code of
conduct....
