New Books and Supplements

Hey CyberScouters,

Just bought the new book and supplement at our Council Scout Store(
Ventura County, Ca.). I was told that they had to "Borrow" some from
Greater Los Angeles Council because their shipment had not arrived yet.
They're charging $7.95 for the book and $3.50 for the supplement. Also,
they sent one copy of the supplement to my Scoutmaster with the Pamphlet
that gives the changes to the advancements.

Personally I think $3.50 is a little steep for a 16 page addendum to the
Book. The other Scouting outlet in Simi has not received their shipment
of the new books yet and Supply cannot tell them when they will be
coming or if they will have the Supplements with them. Hope this helps
rather than adding to the confusion.

As to the books themselves, they are beautiful!!! Extensive use of
photos, a much simpler arrangement as far as advancements go, color
coding of each section,a good pictorial representation of the Eagle
required Merit Badges, and an overall modern look are just some of the
high points of the Handbook. The Supplement is strictly a reiteration
of the Requirements for all ranks with the SO,SL,SM,SS, and The Outdoor
Code on page 2 and the LNT principles on page 3. It states on the
inside cover of the supplement that is is designed to be a temporary
record until the information can be recorded in the Scouts Handbook. The
lack that I see, in both books, is that there is only a place for a
check-off for each requirement and no where to date or initial the
requirement. Since the Handbook is supposed to be the "Final Authority"
on when a Scout finished a requirement, I can see this causing problems
later on when there is a question as to the date a Scout finished his
rank. I hope National is aware of this concern. Anybody in Irving listening???
