Morality and Scouting

Hi Kollin,
Wow, what a tough situation to have to observe happening at your young
age! I can only tell you what I would tell my own 20 year old son. We
don't know and probably will never know, Kollin, what the reasons were
for this pair of people to behave so. They may have had many varied
reasons. Life is strange and weird things happen.
What we do know, is that we have to trust that the people in
leadership roles in your troop. They have the difficult job of
protecting the Scouts. Hopefully,
they have made the right choices.
What I would remind my son to do, is to let the Scout Oath and Law be
his guide. If this couple had never caused him any hurt, I would
remind him that it was not his place to sit in judgement on this
couple. He should remain helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, and
cheerful to them. I would also remind him,that this couple will face
our Heavenly Father some day and then and only then would have to
explain themselves! I would
tell him as I often do, God works in mysterious ways. Our job is to
not question what happens but to continue to trust in Him.
Lastly Kollin, I would advise my son that should this couple return to
Scouting, I would hope that he would continue to let the Scout Oath
and Law be his guide. And I would challenge him to set that example
for the other young people in the troop. It takes a lot of courage to
do the right thing in the face of other's disapproval! I would think
it would take a lot of courage for this pair to return to Scouting
also. As well as a genuine care for the Scouts. If they are not meant
by God to return, it will not happen. If it is part of His plan for
them to return, I would welcome them and leave the judging to Him.
I hope that this is of some help to you. I know that it is confusing
to observe adults behaving in a way that they wouldn't want or condone
you behaving. All you can do is learn from the situation, and set a
better example for the other Scouts yourself.
