Kollin,
Your situation is most unfortunate. But rest assured, everything that
should be done has been done. Adultery is unacceptable in a Scouting
context (or any other context for that matter) and your committee took the
action that was required. It's a shame the couple sees a need to flaunt
their indiscretions publicly, but there's nothing anyone can do about that.
As for what to do when they finally repent and reapply, well, this can be an
object lesson. People do make wrong choices. People make mistakes. When
people make sincere efforts to correct their mistakes, it should be affirmed
and acknowledged. From a practical standpoint, however, I question the
committee's judgement in permitting BOTH to resume their old jobs after the
affair. This seems awkward and uncomfortable at best and an unqualified
disaster at worst. I'd say one or the other -- let them decide. The other
person could join another unit. But, that's empty talk because that
decision belongs to your committee and charter organization. You really
don't have a vote.
