Re: BSA Flags
(no name) ((no email))

(Tom, I hope you didn't mind me posting my answer to you on the
list also; yours was the third response asking me to check the size
of my flag here at the home. I did, and it's a 2x3 feet flag).
Tom asked:
>Are you sure about the smaller flag? I've only seen the normal
>size flag in the catalog.
Yep, I'm sure. The standard flag appears in the regular Supply
Division catalog; you'll have to get something called the BSA's
Flag and Pennant Catalog from the Supply Division (your local
Council should have a copy or two around; I don't have a BSA
stock number handy but I'll provide it if someone else doesn't
post it first (Judy in California, do you have one handy in your
cubicle??) (BTW, we've got to get you a REAL email account!
*smiling*)
Here's the BSA stock numbers for the cotton flags and their sizes:
1399 Cotton 2x3'
1112 Cotton 3x5'
1400 Cotton 4.33x 5.5' (parade sized)
And here's the BSA stock numbers for the nylon flags and their
sizes:
2402 Nylon 2x3'
2407 Nylon 3x5' (this is the default size)
2416 Nylon 4.33x 5.5' (parade sized)
Cub Scout Pack flags are also available in those same sizes, with
the exception of the "parade size" (I guess they couldn't see some
eight-year-old kid marching down the street with an oversized flag
taller than he is!! *smiling*
There's also US flags to match the BSA flag sizes, including the
parade sizes. US and state flags to match the standard BSA flags
can also be purchased from the Supply Division using that same
special catalog ; or through 1-800-Scouter or from their online
catalog at URL::http://www.scouter.com
Interesting, there's also a generic Flag Desk set in nylon that
could be purchased...in 8"x12" (larger than the standard itty-bitty
Boy Scout or Cub Scout flag sets for the desk). This could be an
option for those units that want to carry a Troop flag but even the
larger 2x3 is too big. This one DOES NOT have lettering, and to
put lettering onto it may take that seamstress that Rick was
talking about! That BSA stock number (there's NO Cub Scout flag set
available according to my Supply Division Bulletin; Judy, if you
can check a more recent copy than my 1996 copy here, I'd really
appreciate it, and thank you!) is 1107E.
District flags don't come smaller than the standard size, sorry
Karen. It is a good idea, however, and you might want to write to
the BSA's Supply Division and ask them if they could special order
your District (your Council Scout Executive would have to "sign
off" on the request, BTW) a smaller flag for outdoor activities and
events. I've seldom seen a District flag -- the OFFICIAL one, that
is -- fly at a District Camporee or other outdoor event; I've seen
them standing at Scout Shows and Scoutoramas, though, alongside the
national flag.
Karen's private question to me brings up another question: Does any
of the *Districts* out there place ribbons onto THEIR flag (for
Quality District, or the previous Honor District)?? And *when*
does YOUR DISTRICT "display" it's flag??
I can tell you as a former District Commissioner and as a former
Parapro, that the ONLY time my District's flag was seen by our
volunteers was during the annual awards banquet. The rest of the
time it spent standing in my or my boss' cubicle at the Service
Center. And no, we didn't have ANYTHING attached to the flag.
Settummanque!
