We did the project as a patrol competition with prizes for first done,
artistic merit (as determined by the quartermasters if I recall) and
the like.
Each patrol had a supply of ropes, some supplied tree trunks from a
clearance activity, and a defined goal. My patrol had to construct a
bridge over a dry gully, another had to make a carrier that could be
used to evacuate someone, another a tower, etc.
The staff had done all of the items and was confident that the
materials were at hand and the difficulty at least potentially equal.
Of course, we were able to make the designs so elaborate that the
difficulty was altered, but at least we could have stayed at about the
same level.
We had a really good time with this and I think the staff did as well.
