Whether your Scouts bring their own tents or the Troop provides everything,
managing equipment is an excellent opportunity for building character. Next to
the SPL, the Quartermaster (QM) is probably the most difficult and responsible
position in the Troop. Our Troop is still learning how to use this position, but
we feel it's important enough that we are considering putting the Troop
Quartermaster's name on the new trailer. He is expected to teach the Patrol QM
how to take care of the Patrol gear and how to take keep inventory. No one is
suppose to break camp until the Patrol QM inspects the tents and equipment to
make sure all are clean and ready to go. The Troop QM is responsible for the
loading and unloading of the trailer. The SPL, PLs and adults stay out of the
way unless they are asked to help. It's a great position of responsibility and
honor. But even more, it is a wonderful position to build self-confidence,
initiative, and responsibility. Like the SPL, if the Scout doesn't take it
seriously, the Troop suffers, but this is how the Scouts learn and where the
adults build patience.
Have a great Scoutng week.
