Scouts in Honduras

Bruce McCrea (Bruce_Mccrea@LANSING.CC.MI.US)
Thu, 5 Nov 1998 13:50:03 -0500

I have been communicating by email for the last two years with Alex
Porfirio Villamil Alvarenga, leader of Troop 27, "EK-CHUAK", in
Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Alex was planning to bring a patrol of Scout from
his troop to our 1997 Michigan International Camporee. (U.S. Scouters can
see the Honduran flag in the lower right corner of the camporee backpatch
which is shown on page 33 of the May-June issue of Scouting magazine.)
When a funding source fell through and they could only pay for the airfare
for part of their patrol, they decided that they would either come or not
come as a group, so they did not participate in our camporee. They decided
then that they would definitely come to our next Michigan International
Camporee which will be held in the summer of 2000. Troop 27 was one of the
first groups to sign up. We have been looking forward to hosting them.
Now, with the news of the hurricane that has hit Honduras and Nicaragua, I
imagine they have much more important concerns than whether or not they
will be able to come to Michigan in 2000. Our thoughts and prayers are
with the Scouts and leaders of Troop 27 and all the people of Honduras and
Nicaragua as they go through this ordeal.

Bruce McCrea
Chairman, Michigan International Camporee
