9 minute run

After all the discussion about Personal Fitness merit badge, I obtained
a copy of the MB book this week. With my 12-yr-old I looked at the
indices for the standards. For the 1-mile run, it is 8 mins, 20 secs.
I asked Matthew how fast he could run a mile. He said he ran a 9 min
mile last year--but he was a little worried about running it in 8:20.
So, we decided to look at the 9 minute run standard on the next page.
The standard is 1760 yards--which is one mile (!) In other words, if
Matthew runs a mile in more than 8:20, but less than or equal to
9 minutes, he fails the mile test but passes the 9 minute run.
Interesting!
