Runoff from farming is the largest contributor to water pollution, but
that is caused by fertilization by chemicals, and the chemical
manufacturers hold the purse strings for the media. It is a major
problem the next century will have to deal with.

A large scale farmer can get a higher yield using these chemicals at
first, but studies clearly show that over the long run the yield drops,
and an increasing numbers of suppliments become needed for the same
result. (sounds like drug addiction to me!)

Over a period of time, the soil begins to die, and takes time to
regenerate.
Organic farming is a potential solution, but it is not nearly productive
enough, and doesn't make any money for the corporations.

This is why it is more dangerous to drink untreated water than it used
to be.
I still do high in the Rockies, or deep in West Virginia hills, places
that farming is not possible. It tastes far better fresh than from a
tap or bottle, which is another thread.
