Re: Missing School for Scout event??

Troop 377 will also be attending the USNA-NESA Merit badge Jambo in January
and this will require our Scouts to miss a day of school. Our School district
(I believe it is Pennsylvania Law) will allow students to take a certain
number of educational absences during the year that do not count as absences.
The parent must pre apply to the superintendent of schools two weeks prior to
the absence and must describe what the educational purpose of the trip is.
The student is required to submit a paper to the principal after the trip
describing what he saw and experienced and what was learned by the trip.
We, myself and the school, can clearly see an educational purpose to a
trip to the Naval Academy especially since they will spend part of the day
Saturday in classes. This has been interpreted pretty loosely on occasion to
allow trips to Disney World (studying palm trees and the Amusement park
industry, my son's report). This invitation to the Naval Academy is an
opportunity that will not come up very often and should be taken advantage of
if at all possible.
