Im guessing Ill stay involved at the Boy Scout level once my boys leave Boy
Scouting (1 is a Tiger and 1 is a Webelos I right now). Since I started
something 2 yrs ago, Im sure Ill do it for the cubs until I cant do it
anymore. Its just too much fun.
2 yrs ago, we had a great recruiting year and went from 50 to 102 boys
after school night. For the next 2 1/2 months, I had a 23 boy wolf den
(yes, that was interesting - but another topic).
I learned how many single moms we had in our small community during that
recruiting drive - our phone # was on the brochures and flyers (my wife was
recruiting dir at the time) and I often took the calls since she was in
night classes.
It astounded me that there were as many as there were. When Pinewood came
around, I knew we'd have to do something, so I started having a car clinic
in my garage for about 2 hrs on the first non-holiday Monday of the year.
The first year I was busy the whole time, but didnt run past our 830pm
closing time. I probably cut 20 cars during that time - having the boy draw
on the block so I could cut what they wanted, then having the boy and his
parent (etc) take a file to get the car to the point that when they left,
all they had to do was sand it and do the finish work.
Many of these folks have no tools, or dont know how to use them and just
need a kick start.
This year's clinic was SRO and the last kid didnt leave till almost 1030pm.
Lots more dads this year - apparently its not just single moms who dont
have tools. I had a better saw this year - a nice table coping saw and it
still couldnt keep up. Next year, the pack will be renting a small band
saw, or Ill be eeking a free evening's rental out of the local rental house.
